Fall Grant Recipients

It was a wonderful night at our February business meeting.

As a group, we spend our year fundraising to be able to support Portage Township community grants, scholarships, and community projects. Tonight we had the pleasure of celebrating and hearing from our fall grant recipients.

Portage Robotics, Family Promise, Kiwanis of Portage, Dressed for School, Portage YMCA, The Portage Food Pantry, Distinguished Young Woman and The Portage High School Art Department were among the organizations we awarded grant money to.

A huge thank you to these groups for coming tonight and sharing the good they do with our group.

These grants are made possible with your support of our various fundraising efforts such as our annual bingo event.

Celebrate Jane Austen With Tri Kappa Literacy Committee

In celebration of Portage Tri Kappa’s commitment to further Literacy, Culture, and Education in our community, our Literacy Committee created a Jane Austen tribute, on display at the Portage Public Library during the entire month of November in the glass case near the entrance.

Jane Austen is deemed one of the greatest writers in the English language and her work remains engrained in our literary consciousness. Austen’s major novels continue to dominate literary and popular culture, two centuries after her death in 1817, at the early age of 41. An incredible legacy, considering four of her completed novels were originally published anonymously in her own lifetime, with little success. Today, her six major novels are rarely out of print.

Austen’s six major novels—Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Persuasion, Mansfield Park, Northanger Abbey, and Emma—are considered classics and have endured the test of time to this day. Though renowned for her portrayal of English middle-class life in the early 19th century, Austen’s extraordinary fictional characters have proven to be timeless and universal, touching a human chord in all of us.

Celebrate Shakespeare With Tri Kappa Literacy Committee

The Literacy Committee of Portage Tri Kappa shared a Shakespeare display at the Portage Public Library during Shakespeare’s birthday month of April. Committee member, Dushanka Milatovic states, “We hope that our display will motivate students and adults who have not as yet discovered Shakespeare to become curious and read his work.”

Timeless and known by the world as the best of the best, what Shakespeare wrote about human nature in his plays and sonnets is as true today as it was in the Elizabethan era.

The Literacy Committee works to inspire higher education and culture by promoting the reading of great thinkers and authors. Portage Tri Kappa invites the community to visit the display.

Stay tuned for the Literacy Committee display celebrating another great and timeless writer—early 19th century author JANE AUSTEN.
